gimpy
Last week my jeep had to go into the shop. So I took the bus to Venice & Crenshaw and walked the mile south on Crenshaw to work. My sister would pick me up at midnight. I figured that wouldn't be a good time to be walking, busing or biking through South Central. I did that for 3 days and then on Saturday I went to Acton, to the ranch to train dogs to herd sheep. Unfortunately for me and the sheep, a bobcat had gotten into the pens the night before so the sheep were a bit freaked out and when I went to work the advanced dogs in the large field (I'm guessing but about 1/2 mile + by 1/4 mile on a hillside) the sheep would run to the farthest corner at the bottom of the field. One sheep even got his head stuck in the fencing waaay down there. So I had to walk down the field to help the dogs get the sheep back up to the top of the field four times.

By the end of the day (actually noon time) my knee started to bother me. I asked for some asprin because I knew the hour drive home would "freeze" the joint and there is NO WAY I could call in sick. Why? Because I was transferred to the main shelter from the Annex and my supervisor would say I only called in sick as retaliation for being transferred. I know. It's happened before. Sh*t!! If I wanted to retaliate.... well I have documented proof that will get people fired! Anyway, by the time I got home my knee had swollen up to the size of a grapefruit. I did not twist or pop my knee.... I just think it's from over use. It's a weak knee, having 2 surgeries, arthroscopy and my ACL replaced. I took some Alieve and iced it. Then I got up and found my heavy-duty knee brace.

I've worn it all week, the swelling has gone down, almost back to normal. I have an appointment with my orthopedic doc on - get this - July 31st!
That's his first available appointment! They did offer another doc, but I really like this doc and he's well respected in his field. (and his PA is hooooooootttt!!!)

Today I am limping around the house w/o the brace, taking it easy. Stinky neoprene brace has been washed. i need to pull weeds today. I can do that while sitting.

no zombies in South Central..... yet...
Didn't get them last year..... I probably won't be so lucky this year. I'm taking precautions...me, 2 bottles of water, a snack size packet of peanut M&M's and the pup are in our third hour of sitting up on the metal roof of the "Quarantine Kennel". That's where we house the "man-eaters". I'm cold and my butt hurts. The pup is sleeping on my lap.

I have a 2 way police radio but its only giving me static on all channels. Damn OIC (officer in charge) won't give me the combo to the gun safe. He said something about paperwork when a weapon is discharged. FTS! Duuuuuude, ZOMBIE ATTACK!!

I have all the kennels rigged so that I can open the cages from up here. I could have just opened all of them earlier to let the dogs patrol the compound, but since they're pit bulls, they'd just kill each other. Better to let out only one or two at a time if any zombies come around here...

poor Jax....

poor Jax....

Poor boy! I'm over due on clipping his nails, so I got out the clippers, treats and sat down in "the spot". He *hates* getting his nails cut. Used to bite the heck outta my hands back in the beginning when I first brought him home. Now he reluctantly tolerates it. What a good boy! But today it was a pretty bad experience for him. Jax was trying so hard to be good but the puppy kept jumping on him during the "torture". He never snapped and I got all 4 paws done fairly quickly.

puppy's first few days....
.... have been been great! She learned her name, Calle, in just a few hours. The older dogs and cat are accepting, but not overly warm to her. I can't believe my alpha dog has allowed her to jump on him and chew his tail. He is The Emperor of All.... and expects to be treated as such. Jumping on him is undignified..... but he just gets up and walks away. Calle's ADD then finds something else for her to chew.

I am sooooooooooooo lucky that she sleeps through the night! No crying while in the crate, no middle of the night potty emergencies. Still, there have been accidents in the house. I totally missed one until after I had walked through it a few times. So I had to add mopping the kitchen floor to today's To Do List.

can't wait can't wait can't wait can't wait...
In less than 22 hours I will be picking up my next guide puppy to raise. Her name is Calle and she is a 7 week old yellow lab. Guide Dogs were not sure if they were going to pass this litter on to the Training Program, so I guess I'm going to have a special case to work with.

Nisha's stuff
Nisha has been accompaning me to the Animal Care Conference for the past 3 days. She's been great! After I took her out for a potty break, it was my turn. The handicap stall was in use so we went into a regular stall. When I had finished my business and turned to get some T.P., Nisha sneezed. "Bless the little dog!" I said. I pulled up my chonies and.... AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHH! she had sneezed right into my underwear! Eeew! All cold and wet!!

I am so very sorry that you have been spammed! I *never* authorized the friends invite from Yaari nor sent any myself. I have contacted the site, demanded a cease & desist and to close my account. I will not be a member of such a group that presumes such liberties!

Awesome weekend! Addendum....
Today, no one else showed up at sheep herding class so it was just Cooper & I. He did a terrific job today, really listened, kept himself composed and only gripped (bit the sheep) when it was necessary rather than when he wanted to. On a whim, we put Cooper on cattle....... CATTLE!!! Dey's bigger den sheeps! Cooper did OK. I think he was a bit put off by their size and he was pretty interested in smelling cow flop.... but he would gather them. One bull did "tag" him, ie. Cooper got kicked. It was a light, glancing kick and he hardly even acknowledged it. We will have to see how this new "career" goes...

Awesome weekend!!
Wow! What a great weekend I had!

Saturday I taught my first sheep herding class! I had 2 aussie mixes, 1 full aussie, 2 german shepherds and a pit bull. Yes, a pit bull. All of the students were new to sheep herding. They were all on their 6th or 8th lesson. The owners were really great and the dogs were sweet. It was a lot of fun "reading" the dogs as they worked and adjusting my training methods to fit each dogs needs. Sarah the pit bull required a "heavy hand" as opposed to Dinah the german shepherd that was lacking so much self confidence that if I even looked at her it was too much pressure. The owners of Annamoush (sp?) the aussie mix told me he doesn't listen to anyone, but he certainly heard me and was willing to do what I asked of him. Of course his owners were impressed! And I heard back from the owner of the ranch that her students told her that they enjoyed working with me! Her BF also gave me a good review and he's hard to impress! WOOOO HOOOOOOOO!

Sunday, I started a new class w/ Cooper, my catahoula (Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Hog Dog). He's my sheep herdin' boy! The new class is a "find it" class called Fun with Nosework taught by 2 narcotic dog trainers/handlers. It took Cooper a couple of tries before he caught onto the game. Basically, the trainer hides a ball (some dogs it was a favourite toy or food) in an assortment of boxes and the dog tries to find his ball by sniffing the boxes until he finds it.The trainer got Cooper really amped up.... so amped that he bit & tore her pants leg! Hey! She *did* have his ball!!  Well, she asked at the beginning of class which dogs were not good with other dogs (I raised my hand) and which dogs were not good with people (I raised my hand). "Does he have a preference to males or females?" I said, "Nah, he's not raciest. He'll bite anybody." She was really OK with it and I apologized. I even inquired if she wanted me to bring his muzzel and she said no. Anyway, all the other dogs did well, but Cooper definitely had the highest "drive". More so than the 2 german shepherds which I thought was unusual. The bad thing about this class is that I have to get up at 6 Am to be there at 7:45 AM.... on a SUNDAY!! sheesh! Well, I can do that for six weeks....  ;-)

Damn! gotta wait 6 days to do it again!  This is gonna be a loooooooooooonggg week.......

2008 mega-sucks, already!
My 2 aunts passed away this week. My late father's sister-in-law (Aunt R. ) passed due to her lung cancer recurring. My late father's sister (Aunt A.  - 86 yrs old) died by suicide.

Hopefully, this is the worst 2008 has in store for me. That means it can only get better and that I got the nasty bits out of the way.

Merry Yule!!
Hope everyone had a safe & happy Yuletide! Did Papa Noel bring you everything you wanted? Did you get what you needed?

I gots a new 12.1 mp digital camera, some negative heel Earth shoes, some new sweatshirts, gardening gloves and.....
well...... my sister-in-law sent me a copy of my own book I wrote. WTF is going on with giving me my own shit as a gift???!
OK, to be fair it was in with my late father's personal effects and they didn't want it so they sent it to me. Another glass of eggnog and I'll forgive them.

After prezzies and a shower it was time to put the goose into the oven. mmmmmm.... goose! Xmas dinner was delish!! Goose with wild rice & chestnut stuffing, smashed potatoes, steamed purple carrots and asparagus w/ lemon sauce & pine nuts. Dessert was Mom's creation.... ice cream samwiches covered w/ Cool Whip and a chocolate "shell" on top.

YAY for Yule!!

I have visited several nature preserves, desert museums, national parks and zoos this past summer/fall. Every single one is very visible promoting/educating the protection/conservation idea. But then, in the gift shops, they sell scorpions and tarantulas encased in plastic as key fobs and whatnots. Isn't this a contradiction? Are they saying that just because it's not endangered or at risk (SD Zoo calls it "vulnerable") it's OK to murder them for profit? You'd *never* see these places selling tiger skins or elephant tusks.... what gives? Doesn't the supervisor or the board of directors walk the premises? I know items for sale are ordered by the Purchasing Dept. but don't they have to walk past the conserve & protect posters & signs every day on their way to their office?

Or maybe because they walk through the forest every day they no longer see the trees?

S'cuse me, I have some letters to write.......

OMG!! DISASTER!!!
So there I was, minding my own business, replying to someone on Tribe when my hard drive D I E D! ! AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
So everything is  G O N E ! ! ! Cuz I'm a retarded L O S E R that didn't back up anything! Well, most of my music came from CDs anyway so I didn't lose much there.... mebbe 5 - 12 songs I downloaded but didn't have enough to fill a CD. Current documents that I'm working on, I emailed to my work email cuz I don't have a printer. I guess I really don't need the old documents... I think I can rebuild my spread sheet for miles I drive for Guide Dogs (that's tax deductable)..... but my photos..... my photos are all gone!! All my faire photos, all my puppy photos, my trips, photos of my Dad last Thanksgiving (he passed last July)

I think I can recover mebbe 10% of my photos that I had put on CDs for friends and family.  Oh, so much is lost, so very much is lost....  *buries face in hands*
